Should mosses be removed from sidewalks
and structures?

Moss does not seem to cause significant damage to structures such as sidewalks, steps, retaining walls, or sides of buildings.

Mosses on sidewalks may be slippery when wet, creating a hazard for pedestrians. In that case, removal may be necessary. Otherwise, the decision whether to remove mosses is based primarily on aesthetic considerations.

For information on methods of controlling mosses, see
Methods of Control.
